That’s the amount of rigorously dedicated time it takes to become an expert. If you’ve read Malcom Gladwell’s book “Outliers”, you know what I’m talking about. From Michael Jordan to Bill Gates, it takes extreme dedication to a craft for 10,000 hours before you can even begin to say you’re an expert.
Become an Expert in 5 mins
By the end of this article you can be an expert in Web Design & Development. Sound unbelievable?
Let me backup and share with you my personal journey of 10,000+ hours of becoming an expert. It started when I was in high school more than ten years ago, when I found my calling of designing and developing websites during a computer aided design class I was taking. It was at that moment that I knew I would devote my life to becoming a life long learner in web design & development.
But it took more than just a cursory devotion, it took hours, days, years of perseverance. Hours and hours of school work (which is a great start, but turned out to be a waste of time compared to real life on the job training).
I pushed a mouse for 6 months doing grunt design work for an agency on the beach in Clearwater Florida…. You know those large backlit print ads in the mall? Yeah I just made those all day. Designed, printed, cut and fitted. And all this as an intern.
After a few months of making print ads, I found a job at a Digital Agency specializing in Elearning courses. So I learned everything I could about making online courses that taught AT&T employees how to do their job correctly. So if you could pass the courses I was designing/developing you would be a good employee… at least that’s the idea.
Then I moved on up to an Agency that worked with some bigger brands. Coca-Cola, Wal-mart, Pepsi, Johnson & Johnson. I made websites and digital product demos for some amazing clients, and all from a beautiful tenth story view on the Tampa Bay. I learned how to work with Fortune 100 clients, how to communicate clearly, teach clearly, work on a team, and solve problems in the quickest/smartest way I could.
I started Solid Giant 4 years ago, with the vision of working directly with amazing clients, and helping them solve their website problems. I wanted to do more than just design digital items, I wanted to listen and teach others how to grow their web business, communicate clearly, and build an amazing brand. But I had to work for 10,000 hours before I could even begin to understand how.
It’ difficult to learn new things, which is what puts most people off from getting to 10,000 hours. It’s grueling work. You need passion and curiosity to continue.
Which brings me back to today, I have passion and curiosity for the projects and clients I work on. I love solving problems in the smartest way possible. I love designing beautiful things for amazing clients.
So how do you become an expert?
